Black Protest

Excerpt from Black Protest by Harold Legaspi, Student Anthology Diversity 2019.

We all have our histories.

A young black poet,

Fresh off the pages, said to me once:

‘Be aggressive … be very, very aggressive.’

I wondered if his politics

Was his redemption.

As if this was his way to be heard in everyday life,

As if his poetry carried the wisdom of Gods;

To light humanity’s trodden path.

As if he had the answers,

A polemic for every day of the week.

To the question:

How dare you.
